Cardinal Newman boys’ soccer team captured its second straight Nike Palmetto Cup and defeated a nationally-ranked opponent to do it.

Kyle Burke’s goal in the fifth round of penalty kicks was the difference as the Cardinals defeated Clover, 5-4, in PKs to win the three-day tournament. Clover came into the tournament as No. 2-ranked team in this week’s USA Today’s Top 25 poll.

The match was tied 1-1 in regulation.

Cardinal Newman is the second Midlands team to defeat a top-three team in country this season. Dutch Fork beat No. 1 Wando to win the Capital City Cup back in February. The Cardinals are the first team to win back-to-back Nike Palmetto Cups since Wando in 2016-17.

Senior Matthew Binette was named the tournament MVP. Binette had four goals and three assists in the tournament.

Binette had two goals and an assist in the 5-0 semifinal win over Westside earlier in the day. Clover advanced to the championship by defeating AC Flora in penalty kicks.

In the championship game, Cardinal Newman took the lead on Owen Trimmier’s fourth goal of the season early in the first half. Clover tied it in the 55th minute.

Both teams converted on their first four penalty kicks. On Clover’s fifth attempt, the shot went over the goal. Then, Burke calmly placed it in the net for the winner.

Cardinal Newman (18-2) has three regular-season matches left before the playoffs begin May 6.
