Breaking down Panthers’ cornerback depth chart with Jaycee Horn, Donte Jackson sidelined
The Panthers’ cornerback depth will be tested this week during mandatory minicamp in the wake of Jaycee Horn’s recent left ankle injury.
Horn missed the final week of organized team activities after sustaining the non-surgical injury during a workout. Horn is expected to recover in time for training camp in July, but his absence, along with Donte Jackson’s recovery from Achilles surgery, have left the Panthers light on proven talent at the position.
Still, head coach Frank Reich said Thursday that he isn’t concerned about the cornerback group heading into the final phase of the offseason program.
“This offseason, obviously, with C.J. (Henderson) not taking some reps, and Donte not taking reps, our secondary guys have gotten a lot of work,” Reich said. “This injury to Jaycee, thankfully, it’s a non-surgical injury. And so he should be ready for training camp. I love the work that our secondary has done — it gives us a lot of confidence in our guys.”
The saving grace for the cornerback depth chart is that the group is largely focused on boundary responsibilities under the new regime.
Safeties Jeremy Chinn and Jammie Robinson can be used as a tandem at the nickel corner position, allowing the Panthers’ cornerbacks to focus mostly on the outside jobs. That outlook helps from the perspective of roster numbers and overall role identification.
Here’s a breakdown of the Panthers’ cornerback depth chart:
(Note: For more on the nickel corner position, check out our safety position breakdown)
Injured Starters
Jaycee Horn
Ht/Wt: 6-1, 200 pounds.
Career Stats: 58 tackles, eight pass breakups and four interceptions.
When healthy, Horn is a top-three player on the Panthers’ roster. However, Horn has already missed 17 games due to injury during the first two seasons of his career. With this latest ailment, the “injury-prone” label will be hard for Horn to avoid.
Although it’s a good sign that he is projected to be ready for training camp, it’s hard to feel confident that Horn will hold up throughout a 17-game season given his injury history. Horn needs to continue to grow as a player and avoid the sideline as much as possible entering Year 3 of his NFL career.
Donte Jackson
Ht/Wt: 5-10, 180 pounds.
Career Stats: 244 tackles, 41 pass breakups, 14 interceptions and two forced fumbles.
Jackson is the longest-tenured member of the Panthers’ secondary. Coming off a season-ending Achilles injury, the Panthers are counting on him to start opposite Horn this year.
Although Jackson has been a ballhawk throughout his career, he’s still a polarizing figure on the Panthers’ defense. Following a restructure of his contract, Carolina hopes that he can rebound from injury and respond with a strong comeback season under a new staff.
Veteran Holdovers
C.J. Henderson
Ht/Wt: 6-1, 204 pounds.
Career Stats: 133 tackles, 14 pass breakups and three interceptions.
Henderson has had an inconsistent NFL career. Following a forgettable stint in Jacksonville, the Panthers pounced on a trade for him midway through his second season. After spending a full season in Carolina last year, the Panthers decided not to pick up the fifth-year option on his rookie contract.
But Henderson is still considered a top-three cornerback on the roster, and with Jackson and Horn sidelined, he should see plenty of reps in practice. Henderson has flashed at times during his run in Carolina, and if he can find some consistency, he might overtake Jackson in the lineup this year. He has the added motivation of being in a contract year.
Keith Taylor
Ht/Wt: 6-3, 195 pounds.
Career Stats: 67 tackles and three pass breakups.
Taylor is entering an all-important third summer in Carolina. After flashing talent during the first half of his second season with the Panthers, Taylor had a major letdown performance against the Pittsburgh Steelers in December. While fans still remember that rough outing, Taylor has the opportunity to atone for that performance under a new staff.
With a clean slate, the long and lanky cornerback could carve out a role as a backup corner. The Panthers didn’t draft a cornerback this offseason, so Taylor should have a relatively strong opportunity to stick to the roster.
Stantley Thomas-Oliver
Ht/Wt: 6-0, 190 pounds.
Career Stats: 17 tackles.
Thomas-Oliver spent the majority of last season on the injured reserve list. Known more for his special teams prowess than his work on defense, Thomas-Oliver will get the opportunity to work in the secondary a bit more this offseason due to Horn and Jackson’s injuries. If he can stand out in defensive drills, he will improve his standing on the roster entering training camp and the preseason.
The Rest
Herb Miller
Ht/Wt: 6-2, 190 pounds.
Career Stats: 11 tackles and an interception.
Miller has bounced around quite a bit since entering the league in 2019. He has played in 17 career games for the Tampa Bay Buccaneers and Cleveland Browns, and now he is looking to latch onto the Panthers’ 53-man roster in September. Given his experience, he could push his way up the depth chart if Taylor or Thomas-Oliver struggle in camp. Miller has a chance to shine with additional reps in a competitive room.
Rejzohn Wright
Ht/Wt: 6-2, 193 pounds.
Career Stats: N/A.
Wright, an Oregon State alum, is one of three undrafted rookies fighting for a roster spot. He has really good size for the position, and those measurables could help him out as he tries to earn a job as a boundary corner. Wright has a lot of fans in the NFL Draft writer community.
Mark Milton
Ht/Wt: 6-1, 186 pounds.
Career Stats: N/A.
Like Wright, Milton is an undrafted rookie with good size at cornerback. The Baylor alum had some early standout moments during rookie camp in May, and he has worked pretty regularly during team drills with the deep depth groups. Milton could be a dark horse for a bottom of the roster spot.
Colby Richardson
Ht/Wt: 6-1, 190 pounds.
Career Stats: N/A.
Richardson is competing with Milton, Wright, Miller and Thomas-Oliver for consistent reps this summer. With Horn and Jackson sidelined, Richardson could see some looks with the second-team defense. He falls in line with Milton and Wright as a potential sleeper for a deep-depth role. His job security will probably come down to his performance on special teams.
