Jets’ Antonio Allen out for season with injury
Former South Carolina spur Antonio Allen, a safety for the New York Jets, is out for the season after tearing an Achilles tendon Thursday in practice.
An MRI on Friday morning confirmed the injury, according to ESPN and other news reports.
Allen was waived with an injury designation, the Jets announced. He will be placed on their injured reserve list if he clears waivers.
Allen was hurt on the final play of practice, a non-contact injury on a grass field.
He was entering the final year of his rookie contract.
A seventh-round pick out of USC in 2012, Allen was a Jets safety for his first three seasons, but he was moved to cornerback this past year because of injuries and a lack of depth. He started eight games.
Allen has played in 38 games, with 2.5 sacks and one interception, which he returned for a touchdown. He was also a contributor on special teams.
