WHAT: South Carolina Peanut Party

WHERE: Pelion

WHEN: August 7-8

Welcome to Pelion, population 693. In 1982, when the population was around 213, the town decided to create an event around its primary crop, the peanut, to help fund community growth. And so began the peanut party. Now three decades later and enough peanut shells to circle the Earth twice, the 34th annual event is still drawing throngs of people to it who want to celebrate and consume the state’s recognized snack.

Occasionally someone will add a little Cajun spice but most often it’s just your salted boiled peanuts.

“Peanuts come ready in August so it was just a good plan,” said Shirley Sprenne who not only manages the town’s library but is also a co-chair of the event with Susan Enlow and Ann Smoak. “You can buy them by the cup from the ruritan’s or by the bushel raw.”

This year’s theme of “peanuts, popcorn and baseball” is a reflection of the Lexington County Blowfish Baseball team and owner, Bill Shanahan, being this year’s parade grand marshals.

“They’re going to ride on our float and be on the grounds after the parade,” said Sprenne. “Blowie will be there for photos and signing baseballs.”

Also featured in the parade are Fort Jackson’s own 282nd Army Band commanded by Warrant Officer One Thomas W. Jackson, Jr., and the Pelion High School Marching Band.

Once the peanut pots are blessed the festival officially kicks off, with highlights being a peanut butter and jelly eating contest and a frozen t-shirt contest.

“If you’re really hungry that day and like peanut butter and jelly it’s the best thing to have happen to you,” joked Sprenne about the sandwich contest. You have just three minutes to consume as many half and whole sandwiches as your one bottle of allotted water will help you wash down. “The record is seven and half sandwiches,” said Sprenne. “That was set a couple of years ago. Since that it’s been close but none past that yet.”

But if contests aren’t your thing then you want to check out the crafts fair which features “gnat bats”, t-shirts, exhibitors, art, handmade wooden chairs, corn holes and designers who create jewelry with peanuts.

“We’re trying to focus on handmade items. Not store bought and resold,” said Sprenne.

Performances include Black Bottom Biscuits, a regular favorite of the Peanut Party, local gospel, B. Phillips, PHS Fiddlers, Funky Mofos, Hearthstone Rhythm Band and the Band Barnwell featuring Nick Fogle.

THE VIBE: “We’re just looking for a good, family fun-oriented venue for people to come out,” said Sprenne. “Its a safe fun environment for kids and their families. And you learn a little about the peanut.”

THE VERDICT: Not since George Washington Carver created more than 300 products with the peanut has it been so celebrated. So if you like peanuts and all things peanut-related then bring your wallet and an empty stomach and join Pelions for a weekend that will satisfy your protein deficiency for weeks.
