How I Go Columbia: ColorBlind
FatRat Da Czar, a Columbia-based hip-hop artist, has been a leader in the South Carolina hip-hop scene for almost two decades.
Justin Smith, a Lexington-based folk rock musician, is known across the state for his song writing and for his work in Justin Smith and the Folk Hop Band.
Until two years ago, the two had regional and local successes as individual artists, performing sold-out concerts to dedicated fan bases. In 2013, the two musicians joined forces to become ColorBlind, releasing an album with the same name. The duo’s music gives an introspective look at how the two view each other – as two humans who have similar struggles, but come from very different backgrounds.
On New Year’s Eve, ColorBlind will take the stage at 8 p.m. at Columbia’s Famously Hot New Year’s Eve celebration in downtown Columbia. Here, the two talk about what they like about the capital city.
EAT (Czar): I have several favorite eateries that I frequent; it just depends on the time of day. I think The Original House of Pancakes over on Trenholm Plaza has some of the best breakfast around. For lunch, I like to stay close to The Boom Room Studios, and Dano’s on Rosewood knows what I like. At dinnertime, you might find me at Mr. Friendly’s over on Greene Street.
DRINK (Smith): For a unique experience, I typically head to Old Mill Brewpub in Lexington and enjoy their personal brews. I also enjoy having a nice cigar and craft beer at The Cigar Box on Rosewood or The Maduro Room (also in Lexington). Both are great for relaxing and conducting business.
LISTEN (Czar): I find myself the most at The Music Farm checking out some of my favorite artists when they come to town. I also get out and support all the music festivals that are put on locally in town, especially Famously Hot New Year, where we are blessed to share the stage with Ms. Lauryn Hill this year.
PLAY (Smith): I really enjoy taking my kids to see USC sporting events. The university has so many great teams that it’s never a dull moment for sports in Columbia. When I have some free time, I try to head over to Owen’s Field Skate Park and try not to hurt myself. Also, hanging out on Lake Murray is a habit that I can’t break in the summer.
SEE (Czar): I actually really enjoy just getting out and seeing the natural beauty of Columbia; from the city to the rivers, it always helps me get my mind right.
