Doesn't get any better than this: A macaroni and cheese contest
Nirvana for macaroni and cheese lovers awaits in downtown Columbia Sunday.
Columbia’s Mac Off begins at noon at the Hampton-Preston Mansion at 1615 Blanding St.
What is a Mac Off?
It’s a mac and cheese festival, an event that not only gives tribute to the beloved pasta dish but crowns the yummiest among the 15 local restaurants, cafes, and caterers competing for the Best Mac and Cheese in Columbia.
“People adore this event,” said Alyssa Smith, marketing coordinator for the Mac Off. “It combines all of the things that make a Southerner.”
Because yes, there is more than macaroni and cheese. There will be alcoholic beverages, live music, a vendor village, a jump castle and other kid activities.
“It’s a family friendly event,” Smith said. “It’s a great way to get out and enjoy yourself.”
And eat mac and cheese.
The Mac Off was originally established in Charleston, where it will celebrate its seventh year. It has drawn 6,000 people there.
Folks are encouraged to bring chairs, towels or blankets. No pets, coolers and outside food or drink. Blanding Street between Pickens and Henderson Street will be closed, but street parking is available throughout the historic district.
Admission is $15 and tasting tickets are $2 each. Kids 5 and under will be admitted for free. Tasting tickets are used to taste macaroni and cheese samples and to purchase alcohol/beverages. One tasting ticket buys one sample of mac and cheese. All other food and vendor goods are sold separately. Alcohol and beverage prices will vary and will be posted at the event bars.
Event attendees will have the opportunity to taste 15 macaroni and cheese samples and cast a vote for their favorite at the end of the event.
A guest panel of local celebrity judges also will choose their favorite and present two awards at the end of the competition: Best Mac and Cheese in Columbia: Food Critics Choice; and Best Mac and Cheese in Columbia: People’s Choice.
