3 dead in Thursday evening crash on I-77
Three people were killed Thursday around 5:30 p.m. when the SUV they were riding in crossed into oncoming traffic on I-77 near the Killian Road exit.
Richland County coroner Gary Watts confirmed the fatalities but said more information about those who died in the crash, such as their ages or genders, probably won’t be available until Friday.
According to the South Carolina Highway Patrol, the Ford Escape was traveling south on I-77 when the driver lost control and the sports utility vehicle crossed the divide and ran into the northbound lanes, colliding with a Toyota SUV.
A person in the Toyota was taken to the hospital. That person’s condition was not known Thursday night.
A third vehicle was also damaged when it ran into debris caused by the collision, the highway patrol said.
All traffic remained blocked on northbound I-77 at 9:30 p.m. Northbound traffic was being diverted off the interstate at Killian Road.
More details will be reported as they become available.
