Student with loaded gun arrested at Richland County high school
An 17-year-old was arrested and charged Monday for bringing a gun to a Richland County high school.
Sonnet Williams was charged with possession of a weapon on school property, according to the Richland County Sheriff’s Department.
The incident occurred at approximately 10:30 a.m. Columbia High School, according to the sheriff’s department.
Williams was taken to the main office because of an odor of marijuana on him, and a school administrator searched his bag and located a loaded .357 handgun, the sheriff’s department said.
A RCSD school resource officer was called to the office and placed Williams under arrest.
Williams was taken to the Alvin S. Glenn Detention Center.
Richland County Sheriff Leon Lott stated that it is unfortunate that Williams chose to violate school policy and commit such a serious crime.
