Arrest made after Midlands 7-year-old child shot, other suspects still at large

One person has been arrested and faces multiple charges following the shooting of Midlands child, while authorities are searching for two other suspects.

The 7-year-old boy was shot in the leg Feb. 1, according to the Sumter County Sheriff’s Office. The incident occurred around 11:30 p.m. when several shots were fired at a home in the 5800 block of Broad Street.

Aireal Lakeia Johnson, 24, of Sumter was arrested Monday and faces multiple charges, including:

  • Four counts being an accessory after the fact of attempted murder
  • Four counts of discharging a firearm into a dwelling
  • Criminal conspiracy
  • Breach of trust
  • Larceny for failure to return a rented object and obstruction of justice

Investigators discovered that the suspect vehicle connected to the shooting was a 2017 Jeep. The vehicle was reportedly a rental Jeep obtained through a fraudulent insurance policy under the name of Aireal Johnson, according to the sheriff’s office.

Johnson admitted to the conspiracy for fraud and implicated two other individuals.

Arrest warrants have been issued for Sumter residents Kimberly Denise Burgess, 30, and Rodney Jermaine Burgess, 33.

The boy who was shot was treated for his injury and released, according to the sheriff’s office.
