Lee Correctional dorm remains on lockdown as officials investigate inmate killing
A dorm at Lee Correctional Institution is still on lockdown Tuesday as officials continue to investigate an incident in which an inmate was injured and a second was killed.
Ae Kingratsaiphon, 35, of Aiken County, was killed Thursday, said Stephanie Givens, spokeswoman for the Department of Corrections. Kingratsaiphon was convicted of murder and had been serving his life sentence since 1999.
The second inmate who was injured has not been identified, and the extent of his injuries are unknown. He was taken to an outside hospital for treatment.
Up to 150 inmates could be housed in the dorm in which the killing took place. Lee Correctional Institution, a maximum security facility in Bishopville, is one of the state’s largest prisons. It is currently housing 1,375 inmates.
