Richland deputies investigate fatal shooting

Richland County deputies are investigating the shooting death of a man killed outside his home Saturday night.

Jamell George, 26, died from complications of a gunshot wound to the upper body according to Richland County Coroner Gary Watts.

Officers responded to 7475 Pinedale Drive, not far from Two Notch Road, at about 10:50 p.m., according to the Richland County Sheriff’s Department. They found George, who had been shot multiple times.

Paramedics took George to Palmetto Health Richland, where he was pronounced dead, sheriff’s spokesman Lt. Curtis Wilson said.

At the time of the incident, two men approached George, who was sitting in his vehicle in front his parents’ house – where he frequently visited and sometimes lived, Wilson said.

“A verbal altercation ensued, and then a physical altercation,” Wilson said. “The victim tried to flee the area, and that’s when the suspects fired multiple shots, striking him.”

Sunday would have been George’s 27th birthday, according to a man at the house who said he was George’s brother.

“My brother was very humble, very soft-spoken, not a violent bone in his body,” said Verrick George, 41.

The Richland County Sheriff’s Department is investigating the incident and authorities are asking anyone with information about the incident to call Crimestoppers at 1-888-CRIME-SC.
