UPDATE: Columbia man fatally shot Friday night identified

The Richland County coroner’s office identified the man killed Friday night around 10:10 p.m. at 113 Wood Court as Zaire Janyi Franklin, 25, of Columbia.

An autopsy determined that Franklin died from a gunshot wound to the upper torso, coroner Gary Watts said.

The Richland County Sheriff’s Department is investigating the fatal shooting sheriff’s department spokesman Curtis Wilson said.

Deputies responded to a call at 10:30 p.m. at the St. Andrews Woods Apartment complex off Beatty Road where they found an unresponsive male shot in the upper body.

Investigators are still trying to piece together what happened, Wilson said.
