Detainee found dead in Lexington County jail cell

A man being held in jail in Lexington County was found dead early Monday morning.

Lexington County Coroner Margaret Fisher identified the man as William Dantzler Day III, 43, of Gaston.

Day died overnight in a cell at the Lexington County Detention Center, according to the Lexington County Sheriff’s Department. Officials said he was found unresponsive at about 5:30 a.m. Monday.

An autopsy is scheduled for Tuesday to determine the cause of death.

“It appears to be natural from what I observed,” Fisher said Monday. “All deaths are investigated as suspicious until proven otherwise.”

The coroner’s office and the State Law Enforcement Division are investigating.

Deputies arrested Day on April 25 for grand larceny, sheriff’s spokesman Capt. Adam Myrick said. His bond was set at $10,000.
