Sumter Police charged 74-year-old Nathan ‘Smoot’ McBride with murder Friday in the death of 45-year-old Jermaine Williams.

Police investigating the report of a shooting Friday afternoon found William’s body in the road near the intersection of Council and Bartlette streets.

Police believe the shooting around 3:00 p.m. followed an argument between the two acquaintances that started at McBride’s home. McBride allegedly followed after Williams got in his car and drove away. The police did not say what the two men argued about.

Williams was fatally shot when he stopped and got out of his car in the 40 block of Council Street, police said on Saturday.

McBride was taken into custody a short time later and a weapon recovered, police said.

McBride was charged with murder and possession of a weapon during a violent crime. He was being held at the Sumter-Lee Regional Detention Center Saturday afternoon.

An investigation into the shooting continues.
