Richland sheriff and USC freshman honored at Capital City Classic event

Richland County Sheriff Leon Lott shared the spotlight with a University of South Carolina freshman at a Palmetto Capital City Classic event on Tuesday.

Chosen as the classic’s person of the year, Lott called the award an honor.

“I think it speaks volumes of the relationship the sheriff’s department has built with the community,” Lott said. “I’m very humbled by this recognition today.”

Sharing the stage was Jhane Thomas, 18, a premed student in her first semester at USC, who was crowned Miss PCCC 2016.

“She’s very poised,” said Linda Huggins, PCCC’s assistant executive director. “We’re looking for someone that we believe in. She’s involved with the community and her church.”
