Police say she lied about rape at Clemson frat house. She stands by her claim

An 18-year-old woman faces a felony charge after investigators say she lied about being raped at a Clemson University fraternity house.

But the woman told The Independent Mail of Anderson on Thursday that she is, indeed, the victim of a sexual assault.

“This story is being blown out of proportion, and that’s all I can say,” the woman said, according to The Independent Mail.

The woman is accused of filing a false report of a sexual assault Jan. 27, the Oconee County Sheriff’s Office said in a news release Thursday.

According to deputies, the woman said she was assaulted at Clemson’s Delta Chi Fraternity house.

After an investigation, deputies say they found evidence that showed the woman had consensual sex with a man at the fraternity house and had provided false information to an investigator.

The woman was arrested Wednesday and charged with filing a false report of a felony.

The person the woman accused of sexually assaulting her has not been charged, The Independent Mail reported.

Rapes are rarely falsely reported, research has shown. About 2 to 10 percent of sexual assault claims are found false, according to the National Sexual Violence Research Center and The National Center for the Prosecution of Violence Against Women.

An estimated two-thirds of all sexual assaults are never reported to law enforcement, the National Sexual Violence Research Center reports.

If found guilty of filing a false report, the woman could face up to five years in prison and/or up to a $1,000 fine.
