Clemson quarterback Deshaun Watson won an ESPY on Wednesday night for “Best Male College Athlete.”
He won out over Wake Forest soccer player Ian Harkes, Kansas basketball playker Frank Mason, Maryland lacrosse player Matt Rambo and Penn State wrestler Zain Retherford.
Watson was also nominated for “Best Championship Performance,” which included the game-winning touchdown pass with one second remaining in the national championship game against Alabama. That award went to Kevin Durant of the NBA’s Golden State Warriors.
Clemson’s national championship football team and the South Carolina women’s basketball national championship team are among the seven nominees for “Best Team,” but that award went to the NBA’s Warriors.
Never miss a local story.
Clemson football also was nominated in the “Best Upset” category, but lost out to Mississippi State’s women’s basketball team, which defeated previously unbeaten and top-ranked UConn in the Final Four.
