Former South Carolina soccer star selected No. 2 overall in pro draft
South Carolina women’s soccer star Savannah McCaskill was selected second overall in the National Women’s Soccer League Draft on Thursday by the Boston Breakers.
McCaskill, an All-American and MAC-Hermann Trophy finalist for national Player of the Year, led the Gamecocks to their first College Cup appearance in program history this past fall. She is currently training with the U.S. Women’s National Team in Southern California and could potentially make her national team debut when the U.S. faces Denmark in a friendly on Jan. 21.
McCaskill’s parents and USC coaches Shelley and Jamie Smith were present in Philadelphia, where the NWSL Draft took place, and the Chapin native recorded a short video thanking the Boston Breakers for selecting her.
“Just thank you to Boston for taking me, and can’t wait to get to work and get out there and get started. Go Breakers,” McCaskill said.
She's off the board early!

I think McCaskill will do wonders for Boston. Just the player they needed, according to the expert @allibecc. #NWSLDraft

McCaskill: captain's armband for the U-23s, fast, powerful, tenacious, hard to stop once she gets going, has played as a outside back in summer league, gritty. #NWSLdraft
