What’s at stake

South Carolina is trying to improve to 2-0 overall and 2-0 in the SEC under first-year coach Will Muschamp after a 13-10 win over Vanderbilt. Mississippi State comes into the game 0-1 after a stunning 21-20 loss at home to South Alabama. USC players this week said they expect MSU to be plenty motivated to bounce back, while Muschamp said the Bulldogs’ loss “has zero to do with what’s going to happen Saturday night in Starkville.”

‘SEC Nation’ is in town

The SEC’s traveling college football show, “SEC Nation,” will originate from the Junction in Starkville on Saturday and air from 10 a.m. to noon Eastern time.

The last time in Starkville

USC scored 14, 15 and 16 points in the last three games played in Starkville, all Gamecocks wins. The 14-12 comeback win in 2011 might best be remembered as the game in which Gamecock great Marcus Lattimore sustained the first of his two knee injuries. He left the contest in the fourth quarter after carrying 17 times for 39 yards and a touchdown.

The streak

The Gamecocks have won seven straight against the Bulldogs.

Sept. 23, 2000: USC wins 23-19*

Sept. 20, 2001: USC wins 16-14

Oct. 5, 2002: USC wins 34-10*

Aug. 31, 2006: USC wins 15-0

Sept. 29, 2007: USC wins 38-21*

Oct. 15, 2011: USC wins 14-12

Nov. 2, 2013: USC wins 34-16*

Mississippi State players to watch

1. Junior quarterback Damian Williams was moderately productive, if conservative, in the opener, throwing for 143 yards on 20-of-28 passing and running for 93 yards on 12 carries.

2. Senior Fred Ross is the Bulldogs’ top target, a big slot receiver who serves as an outlet in the team’s spread attack. Coming off a 1,007-yard season (on 88 catches), he led the team with six receptions in the opener and broke a 46-yard run.

3. Senior defensive end A.J. Jefferson was Mississippi State’s most disruptive returning lineman, and he continued the trend with four tackles for loss and two sacks against South Alabama.
