USC’s Jacob August has incentive vs. Deke Adams’ ECU D-line
One might expect the Gamecocks defensive linemen who played for Deke Adams would have some feelings about seeing their former position coach across the field Saturday when South Carolina faces East Carolina.
But that wouldn’t be correct, as both Kelsey Griffin and Dante Sawyer were mum or brushed off the question Tuesday.
Yet sophomore tight end Jacob August, who will have to match up with Adams’ defensive ends, is looking forward to the reunion, just to show how far he’s come as a player.
“I’m ready to get out there and show him I’m not a scout team player anymore,” August said.
Adams obviously coached a different position, but August said Adams was his coach more than anyone else when August was on the scout team.
Adams spent three seasons in Columbia coaching the defensive line for Steve Spurrier. He went north (and east) to Greenville, N.C., after that staff broke up and Will Muschamp arrived.
August, who starred locally in high school at Cardinal Newman, started Saturday’s game against Mississippi State and had one catch for 10 yards.
