CBS report: Will Muschamp under most pressure of new SEC coaches
South Carolina’s Will Muschamp is under the most pressure to win now among the SEC’s three new football coaches, according to a ranking by CBS Sports’ Dennis Dodd.
Dodd in a “Hot Seat Rankings” report gave his take on the job security of all 128 college football coaches. Each coach was given a numerical grade ranging from 0 (untouchable) to 5 (win or be fired).
Dodd assigned Muschamp a 3, which equates to “pressure mounting.” The Gamecocks are coming off a 3-9 season in which Steve Spurrier resigned in October. Muschamp was hired in December and has yet to coach a game at USC.
Dodd’s opinion contradicts that of ESPN’s Peter Burns, which last month said Muschamp was under the least pressure among all SEC coaches in 2016. South Carolina’s first-year head football coach was optimistic during his spring speaking tour, saying he believes “we’ve got good enough players here to win the (SEC) East.”
Fellow first-year SEC counterpart Kirby Smart (Georgia) received a 1 grade (safe and secure), while Missouri’s Barry Odom was assigned a No. 2 (all good ... for now).
Of the 29 new head coaches, three had a score of 3 or higher: Muschamp and East Carolina’s Scottie Montgomery each received a 3 (USC hosts the Pirates on Sept. 17). Baylor “acting” coach Jim Grobe was assigned a 5.
Among SEC coaches, those who made Dobb’s list of 15 most on the hot seat were LSU’s Les Miles, Kentucky’s Mark Stoops, Auburn’s Gus Malzahn, Texas A&M’s Kevin Sumlin and Vanderbilt’s Derek Mason.
