Weather damages Williams-Brice Stadium sign
The severe weather that moved through the Columbia area Monday night damaged one of the signs at Williams-Brice Stadium.
The 29-foot-by-51-foot lighted sign is outside the stadium facing Bluff Road and the Gamecock Park. The $200,000 aluminum sign was added in 2014.
According to South Carolina sports information: “The sign company concluded that the sign/black lexan material in the block C was hit by lightning and cracked, then the wind blew it out. Still working on a total assessment and plan to replace the material that makes up the face of the sign/Block C.”
By Tuesday morning, the entire black portion of the letter was gone, including part of the logo’s tailfeathers.
According to the National Weather Service, the highest recorded gust Monday night was between 47 and 48 mph.
