This QB hasn’t started his freshman year, but he’s got an offer from South Carolina
It’s not often you find an eighth-grader quarterbacking a high school football team from Day 1. Then again, it’s not often you find an eight-grader who can pull that off, or one who stands at 6-foot-3.
But Freedom Prep Academy (Memphis, Tenn.) passer Tevin Carter fits that bill, and he’s got an offer from South Carolina to boot.
Cater tweeted he received the Gamecocks offer Tuesday morning, his first. The Gamecocks, with new quarterback coach Dan Werner, have been extending offers further out, including top 2021 QB Aaron McLaughlin.
@CoachDanWerner @pure_youth I’m truly blessed to receive my first scholarship offer from South Carolina as 8th QB

Carter was the first quarterback to take a snap for the first-year Freedom Prep program. He started most of the season, outside missing a few games with a minor injury, throwing for more than 1,000 yards and running for around 500 more.
His coach, Jerald Cook, said Carter earned all-conference honors and led his team to the playoffs.
The Gamecocks staff caught wind of him because USC is recruiting his 2020 teammate Chris Morris, a 6-foot-4, 275-pound offensive tackle with offers from Alabama, Florida, Florida State, Georgia and Oklahoma.
USC was one of the first to offer Morris. As the coaches who stopped by watched his film, the way Carter moved and threw caught their eyes.
“It’s very cool,” Cook said. “He’s probably the only kid in Memphis in eighth grade to be offered a scholarship. It’s never happened in Memphis since I’ve been here.
“It’s been crazy. He’s been getting a lot of buzz, a lot of attention and he’s all worthy of it.”
Cook compared him to a “Cam Newton in high school football.”
