Ridge View’s Butler, L-E’s Campbell make college choices
Two Midlands high school football players made college commitments Friday.
Ridge View’s Cam Butler verbally committed to Colorado State, while Lugoff-Elgin’s Elliott Campbell announced he’s headed to Furman.
Butler becomes the third Blazer to make a commitment, joining Damani Staley (South Carolina) and Cam Muller (Old Dominion). The senior visited Colorado State last week with teammate Latheron Rogers-Anderson. The 6-foot-3, 225-pounder caught 12 passes for 191 yards last year and can play both receiver and tight end.
“The atmosphere is amazing there and irreplaceable,” Butler said. “Just felt like I was right down the street from Ridge View. It really felt just like home.”
Under former Georgia assistant Mike Bobo, Colorado State has aggressively recruited the Southeast the past two years, and made 18 trips to satellite camps this summer, including the one held at Ridge View. Dorman quarterback Collin Hill signed with CSU last year.
“We’re fired up about the newest member of #RAMPAGE17!!! #803,” Bobo posted on Twitter following Butler’s commitment.
Campbell is being recruited to play tight end at Furman, but will likely play along the offensive line this year for the Demons. He added 40 pounds in the offseason and is now 265.
Campbell said colleges like his versatility and that he can play both positions. He had eight offers, including Gardner-Webb, Richmond and Wofford, but felt Furman was his best fit.
“Just felt like part of the family from the day I met the coaches,” Campbell said. “And you can’t turn down the feeling of family, and then also the education that Furman offers is top of the line.”
