Third house fire in Midlands county in two weeks displaces couple

A couple is without a home after a fire Friday morning in Lugoff, according to the American Red Cross, which is helping with immediate needs.

The fire happened at a home on Sandwood Drive, the Red Cross said.

The blaze was one of three Kershaw County house fires in the last two weeks. The others happened Dec. 29 in Elgin, which neighbors Lugoff, on Goff Lane and Highway Church Road. The house fire on Highway Church Road killed an elderly man, the Kershaw County Coroner’s Office reported.

Beyond helping families when fires impact them, the American Red Cross collects blood donations. Currently, the Red Cross is dealing with an “unprecedented” and “historically low” blood supply, The State reported in December.
