SC man was fishing with family when he went under the water, coroner says

A South Carolina man drowned and died over the weekend, the Fairfield County Coroner’s Office said Monday.

Marquavious Sanders, a 25-year-old Great Falls resident, died in Saturday’s accident, Coroner Chris Hill said in a news release.

Sanders was fishing with family in a portion of Lake Wateree in Ridgeway, according to the release. Sanders went into the lake to retrieve fishing equipment and went under water, Hill said.

Sanders’ family called 911 and bystanders began CPR until EMS arrived at the scene, according to the release. Sanders was taken to the emergency room at MUSC Fairfield Emergency Department where he died, Hill said.

The coroner’s office continues to investigate the circumstances that led to Sanders’ death.

This is at least the fifth water death in the Midlands in the past two months.

Also in Lake Wateree on June 18, a 37-year-old man was swimming with family when he disappeared under water for more than an hour and died, the coroner’s office said.

On June 10, a 13-year-old was pulled from Kendall Lake in Camden and later died after being flown to Prisma Health Richland, the Kershaw County Coroner’s Office said.

On May 5, a 15-year-old Camden High School student died following a boating accident while fishing on the Wateree River, according to the Kershaw County Coroner’s Office.
