Columbia teenager killed in shooting identified by South Carolina coroner
Deputies are investigating after a man was shot to death Tuesday in Columbia.
Dion Briggs, an 18-year-old Columbia resident, was identified as the shooting victim, Richland County Coroner Naida Rutherford said Thursday.
At about 7 p.m. Tuesday, deputies responded to reports of a shooting in the 1700 block of Nearview Drive, according to the Richland County Sheriff’s Department . That’s just west of Percival Road and Interstate 77 in northeast Columbia.
When deputies arrived, they encountered a man, later identified as Briggs, who was unresponsive in front of a home. The teen had been shot in the upper body, the sheriff’s department said. Richland County EMS responded to the home and pronounced the man dead.
The sheriff’s department said any shooters fled before deputies arrived, and no arrests have been reported. The department said it believed the shooting was an isolated incident, but information about a motive for the gunfire was not available.
Those who may have information about the case are asked to call the sheriff’s department at 803-576-3000, or submit an anonymous tip through CrimeStoppers.
