A body was found and now man’s charged with murder, South Carolina sheriff says

Weeks after a deadly shooting in South Carolina a man has been arrested, according to the Orangeburg County Sheriff’s Office.

On Monday, Shagura Mack was charged with murder, the sheriff’s office said in a news release. The 47-year-old Orangeburg resident also was charged with possession of a weapon during a violent crime, Orangeburg County court records show.

The charge is connected to the Oct. 18 shooting death of Jody Riley, according to the release.

On Oct. 18, deputies responded to reports of a shooting at 1529 Gregg St., the sheriff’s office said. That’s in a part of Orangeburg between U.S. 178 and U.S. 301/Five Chop Road, near Dukes Bar-B-Que.

Deputies found a man, later identified as Riley, who had been shot multiple times and died at the scene, according to the release.

No other injuries were reported.

Following an investigation, the sheriff’s office said it identified Mack as the gunman, and he was taken into custody without incident.

Information about a motive for the shooting, as well as if Mack and Riley knew each other prior to the gunfire, was not available.

Mack is being held at the Orangeburg County Detention Center awaiting a bond hearing, according to the release. Following a bond hearing, Mack is scheduled to return to court on Dec. 10, judicial records show.

Despite the arrest, the sheriff’s office said it’s continuing to investigate the shooting. Anyone with information is asked to call the sheriff’s office at 803-533-5812, CrimeStoppers at 888-CRIME-SC or submit an online tip.

In case of an emergency, always call 911.

Mack has been arrest multiple times in the past dozen years, according to court records. A May 2019 arrest on an attempted murder charge is pending, court records show.
