House torn down next to Columbia’s Cinnamon Roll Deli. What’s next for the site?
A popular Columbia restaurant known for its cinnamon rolls has torn down a house on a neighboring property to expand parking for the business.
Devine Cinnamon Roll Deli, which is located at 2617 Devine St., has owned the neighboring property at 2621 Devine St. for a decade, where a small gray house was located. On Monday, that house next door was demolished.
Cinnamon Roll Deli co-owner Jody Kreush confirmed to The State on Tuesday that the house, which had long been vacant, was taken down to make room for an additional parking lot for the business. The deli will remain open while the remnants of the house are removed and construction on the parking lot proceeds, Kreush noted. The Devine street business operates from 7 a.m. to 2 p.m. Wednesday through Sunday.
Kreush said the additional parking lot should be ready in early July. The deli currently only has 12 parking spots. The expansion will add 15 additional spaces.
“This will also give people the ability to see us from the road,” Kreush said, noting how the deli is set back from Devine Street. She also said the deli has plans to add outdoor seating, with a covered portico, at some point in the near future.
The Devine Cinnamon Roll Deli has been a well-known spot on Columbia’s Devine Street, just east of Five Points, since it opened a decade ago. The deli has been mentioned on Food Network, and featured in People Magazine and Southern Living, among other publications.
Last month the deli announced that it would be opening a second location in the Midlands, at 309 S. Lake Drive just off downtown Lexington in the former Cafe Strudel building. Construction and prep work for that Lexington location is ongoing now.
The menu at Cinnamon Roll Deli includes, naturally, a host of cinnamon rolls, including flavors such as apple cobbler and strawberry cheesecake. It also has a deep roster of breakfast sandwiches and grits bowls. At lunchtime the deli has been known for all-beef hot dogs, paninis, sandwiches, soup and more.
