One man was killed and another was injured in early-morning shooting, SC cops say
A search is underway for the men who stormed into a South Carolina home where one person was killed and another was injured early Thursday, the Newberry County Sheriff’s Office said.
At about 2 a.m., a man called Newberry County 911 and claimed to have been shot during an attempted robbery, the sheriff’s office said in a news release.
Deputies responded to a home on Green Meadows Drive, just outside the city of Newberry, and found a man who had been shot in the lower torso lying on the ground outside, according to the release.
That victim said another person inside the house might have been shot, and deputies found the body of another victim in the backyard, the sheriff’s office.
Newberry County Coroner Laura Kneece identified the deceased victim as 31-year-old Broadway, North Carolina, resident Kier Leon Marsh, according to the release. Marsh resided at the Green Meadows Drive address at the time of the shooting, according to the release.
The surviving victim told deputies that several men entered the home, began firing shots before leaving in a dark-colored sedan, the sheriff’s office said.
Newberry County EMS treated the victim before he was flown to a nearby trauma center, according to the release. Further information on the surviving victim’s condition was not available.
No other injuries were reported.
There was no word if anything was stolen during what the sheriff’s office called an attempted robbery, but those involved could face murder and attempted murder charges, among other crimes.
Information about how many men entered the home, and if they had a previous relationship with either of the victims, was not available.
The South Carolina Law Enforcement Division helped the sheriff’s office process the scene, according to the release.
The sheriff’s office, coroner’s office and SLED are continuing to investigate what Sheriff Lee Foster called an “isolated incident.”
An autopsy has been scheduled, according to the release.
