A teenager was killed and an SC man has been charged with murder, Columbia police say
A teenager was killed and a man was charged with murder and another crime, according to the Columbia Police Department.
Marcus J. Chaplin, 37, was also charged with possession of a weapon during a violent crime following the recent shooting death of a 17-year-old male, police said in a news release.
The Richland County Coroner’s Office has not publicly identified the teen victim.
The shooting happened in the 3100 block of Truman Street on Dec. 29, 2024, according to the release. That’s in the area between S.C. 277 and Two Notch Road.
At about 4 a.m., officers responded to a Shotspotter alert, police said. ShotSpotter is a technology that uses acoustic monitors to detect a sound like gunfire, and the system sends the gunfire’s location to police within 45 seconds.
While they were on the way to Truman Street, officers learned the alert had been upgraded to a “shooting hit,” according to the release.
Officers found the teenage victim who died at the scene, according to police.
Chaplin is accused of confronting the 17-year-old in a Truman Street yard after learning of a recent relationship with “a loved one,” police said. Richland County court records show Chaplain lives on Truman Street.
Chaplin’s accused of shooting the teen multiple times, police said.
Further information about the teen’s relationship with the “loved one” was not available.
No other injuries were reported.
At the time of the shooting, police said the “parties involved are cooperating with officers.”
Chaplin was arrested Monday and booked at the Alvin S. Glenn Detention Center, according to jail records. No bond has been set and Chaplin remains locked up in the Richland County jail, records show.
