Couple arrested after chase for what was thrown from vehicle, SC police say
A married South Carolina couple was arrested Tuesday after leading a chase and throwing drugs out of their vehicle, according to the Florence Police Department.
Florence residents Roderick and Danell Titus were charged with multiple drug crimes, police said Wednesday in a news release.
On Tuesday, officers attempted to pull over the vehicle being driven by Danell Titus near the intersection of West Lucas Street and North Irby Street, according to the release. The 40-year-old woman disregarded the attempted traffic stop and led the officers on a brief chase, police said.
Information about why officers initially tried to stop the vehicle was not available.
During the pursuit, 44-year-old Roderick Titus threw “large amounts of suspected cocaine from the passenger window,” police said in the release. This happened within a half mile of Lola Jones Park and Williams Middle School, according to the release.
The chase ended when the vehicle stopped on Buckingham Road and both Danell and Roderick Titus were taken in custody without incident, police said.
A small amount of cocaine and about 7.1 grams of cocaine base were found inside the vehicle, according to the release. Officers also collected the evidence that was thrown from the vehicle during the pursuit, which was approximately 60 grams of cocaine, police said.
The street value of that amount of cocaine can exceed $12,000, according to estimates from the Guardian Recovery Network — an organization that treats alcohol and drug addiction.
Both husband and wife were charged with trafficking cocaine (28 grams or more); manufacture, distribution, etc. of cocaine base (possession of cocaine base) and distribute, sell, manufacture or possession with intent to distribute, of controlled substance, near school, according to the release.
Danell Titus also was charged with driving under suspension and failure to stop for blue lights, police said.
Both husband and wife are being held at the Florence County Detention Center, and no bond has been set for either, jail records show.
