Road was blocked by stopped car, SC cops say. What was in it sent driver to jail
A South Carolina man was arrested after deputies found him passed out behind the wheel of a running car in the middle of a Midlands road, according to the Sumter County Sheriff’s Office.
But it was what deputies found inside the vehicle that landed 31-year-old Dalzell resident Justin Michael Ray Worley in jail, the sheriff’s office said in a news release.
On Tuesday, deputies responded to a call about a suspicious vehicle blocking the road near Alva Drive and Reona Avenue, according to the release. When they arrived, deputies found Worley slumped over in the driver’s seat with the vehicle still in drive and his foot on the brake, the sheriff’s office said.
Deputies said they saw a machete by him, but it was something else inside the vehicle that led to his arrest.
When deputies were able to wake Worley he admitted to having illegal drugs and paraphernalia, and both heroin and methamphetamine were found in a search, according to the release.
Worley was charged with possession of heroin, possession of meth, and was also cited for operating an uninsured vehicle, the sheriff’s office said.
He was taken to the Sumter County Sheriff’s Office Detention Center, according to the release.
Bond was set at $45,000 on the combined charges and has not been posted, Sumter County court records show. Worley is scheduled to return to court on the charges on July 11, according to judicial records.
