Man wanted on murder charge in SC arrested more than 500 miles away, cops say

A man who is facing a murder charge in South Carolina was arrested several states away, the Richland County Sheriff’s Department said Sunday in a news release.

Desmond Coleman was arrested Aug. 8 in Indiana by the Evansville Police Department, according to the release. Information about how Coleman was located nearly 600 miles from his home in Columbia was not available, but the 29-year-old is being held without bond in the Vanderburgh County jail, records show.

Coleman is wanted in Richland County where he’s suspected of fatally shooting another man, the sheriff’s department said.

At about 4 a.m. on July 2, deputies responded to a call about a shooting at the CK Mart gas station/convenience store at 2624 Broad River Road in Columbia, according to the release. Deputies found 29-year-old Columbia resident Deshawn J. Carroway, who had been shot multiple times and died at the scene, according to the Richland County Coroner’s Office.

No other injuries were reported.

Information about a motive for the shooting was not available.

On July 3, deputies attempted to execute a “high-risk” warrant for Coleman, and there was a large police presence in the Chadford Road area in Irmo, the sheriff’s department said. While a car connected to the homicide was towed from the residence, Coleman was not seen.

There was no word about extradition plans for Coleman, or when he could be returned to South Carolina.
