It was ‘foolish and illegal,’ SC sheriff says of what student brought to school
A teenager was recently caught bringing a BB gun to a South Carolina school, the Sumter County Sheriff’s Office said Wednesday.
The gun was discovered when the 16-year-old was entering Lakewood High School Monday, the sheriff’s office said in a news release. The high school is at 350 Old Manning Road, near the intersection with U.S. 15.
While passing through the metal detector at the high school’s entrance, the 16-year-old student’s book bag triggered the alarm, according to the release. The BB gun was then found during a search of the teen’s bag, the sheriff’s office said.
The student was detained by the school resource officer and later released to their mother, according to the release.
Information about charges the teen faces was not available, but the case will be petitioned to Sumter County Family Court, the sheriff’s office said.
There was no word if the student will face any punishment from either Lakewood High School or the Sumter School District.
“We do not know the student’s motive for attempting to bring a gun to school, but we do know it was a foolish and illegal act,” Sheriff Anthony Dennis said in the release. “We are grateful the school’s safety protocols worked exactly as intended.”
