Substitute teacher arrested after found with gun at SC high school, sheriff says

A substitute teacher at a high school in South Carolina was arrested Monday after he brought a gun onto the school’s campus, according to the Richland County Sheriff’s Department.

Justin Fox, 37, was at Blythewood High School with the weapon, the sheriff’s department said in a news release. The Richland 2 school is at 10901 Wilson Blvd., near Exit 27 on I-77.

It was about 9 a.m. Monday when school officials were alerted by the metal detector that there was a firearm in Fox’s bag, according to the release. School resource officers were notified and responded to the metal detectors to secure the firearm and detain Fox, the sheriff’s department said.

The officers at the school confirmed that Fox is the legal owner of the gun, according to the release. Fox told deputies that he forgot the firearm was in his bag, the sheriff’s department said.

No injuries were reported and there was no report of the gun pointed in a threatening manner.

Fox was charged with carrying weapon on school property and booked into the Alvin S. Glenn Detention Center, according to the release. No bond has been set for Fox, who remains behind bars, jail records show.

Following a bond hearing, Fox is scheduled to return to court on May 29, according to Richland County judicial records.

There was no word if Fox will face any discipline from the school district or if his teaching license will be affected.
