More questions than answers after SC law enforcement was involved in shooting
Both the South Carolina Law Enforcement Division and Sumter County Sheriff’s Office confirmed that there was a shooting Sunday afternoon that involved a law enforcement officer. Not much more information was made available by the law enforcement agencies.
The shooting happened at about 4:30 p.m. near Mason Road, the sheriff’s office said Sunday. When contacted for information about the shooting Monday morning, a spokesman for the sheriff’s office said the incident is being investigated by SLED, and deferred all questions to that agency.
When contacted by The State, a spokeswoman for SLED confirmed the investigation into the shooting is active and ongoing.
Neither law enforcement agency would say if anyone died or was injured in the shooting. Additionally, there was no word if any deputies were hurt.
The sheriff’s office did not answer questions about why deputies were in the area prior to the shooting, or if any of the deputies involved have been placed on leave or otherwise reassigned during the investigation.
SLED declined to answer questions about any arrests or charges connected to the shooting, or a motive for the gunfire.
It was not clear if any deputies fired their weapons.
SLED did say that more information will be made available, but when it will be shared isn’t known.
