Man who drove away from deadly crash arrested, Columbia police say
Weeks after a man was killed in a hit-and-run crash in South Carolina another man was arrested, according to the Columbia Police Department.
Elijah Green, 36, was charged with hit-and-run involving death, failure to render aid and provide information and violation of beginner’s permit, police said Tuesday in a news release.
The charges stem from a March 20 crash, according to the release.
At about 7 p.m. March 20, Green was driving in the 5400 block of Forest Drive when he struck the pedestrian, police said. That’s near the junction with Percival Road, in a part of Richland County between North Trenholm Road and I-77.
Investigators determined that Green left the road, hit the curb and a stop sign, then struck the 57-year-old victim with an SUV, according to the release.
When officers arrived, they found the victim on the ground with life-threatening injuries, police said. The man was taken to an area hospital and died last week, according to the release.
As of Tuesday, the Richland County Coroner’s Office has not publicly identified the victim from the March 20 crash.
Green was booked into the Alvin S. Glenn Detention Center Monday, jail records show. He remains behind bars after being denied bond, according to jail records.
Green is scheduled to return to court on June 26, Richland County judicial records show.
Through Sunday, 195 people had died on South Carolina roads in 2026, according to the state Department of Public Safety. A minimum of 914 people were killed in collisions in South Carolina in 2025, DPS data shows.
At least 12 people have died in Richland County crashes this year, and 48 people died in wrecks there in 2025, according to DPS data.
