Two arrested after man was found fatally shot in crashed car, SC sheriff says

Little more than a week after a shooting victim was found dead inside a crashed vehicle two men were arrested, according to the Richland County Sheriff’s Department.

Devante Walker, 27, and Leroy Mclamore, 29, each were charged with murder and possession of a weapon during a violent crime, the sheriff’s department said Thursday in a news release.

The charges are connected to the April 19 death of man who was found behind the wheel of a vehicle that crashed in the 3800 block of Humphrey Drive, according to the release. That’s in northeast Columbia, not far from Two Notch Road.

At about 10:20 p.m. April 19, deputies responded to a report of a crash, the sheriff’s department said. Deputies found a car that had struck a tree, and an unresponsive man was inside the car, according to the release.

Members of EMS also responded, and while working with the victim, they discovered he had been shot in the upper body, the sheriff’s department said. The man was taken to an area hospital and later died, according to the sheriff’s department.

The man who died as a result of a fatal crash and shooting was identified as 34-year-old Columbia resident Jibrael Sesay, Richland County Coroner Naida Rutherford said Thursday.

After obtaining surveillance footage and interviewing witnesses, investigators determined that Walker and Mclamore were the homicide suspects, the sheriff’s department said.

The day following the shooting, April 20, Walker was taken into custody without incident and taken to the Alvin S. Glenn Detention Center, according to the release. Mclamore was arrested April 22, and also was taken to the county jail, the sheriff’s department said.

Both men remain in custody and are awaiting a bond hearing, according to the release.

There was no word about a motive for the shooting, or if Walker and Mclamore knew the victim prior to the deadly gunfire.
