Lexington County Council election results are in. Here are the winners
Gene “Bimbo” Jones in District 5 and Charli Wessinger in District 6 are set to be the Republican candidates for Lexington County Council after Tuesday’s primaries.
Wessinger will not face a Democratic challenger in the November general election while Jones will face Democrat Bobby Porter.
Jones earned 2,424 votes (61% of the vote) and Wessinger earned 3,556 votes (57% of the vote) with all precincts reporting.
The four Republicans who ran for the seats competed against one another in a county that is considered a conservative stronghold in the Palmetto State.
In District 5, which includes Red Bank and South Congaree, Jones ran against Joel Tyson.
Jones, who works as a tire retailer, told The State in a previous interview one of his priorities would be increasing funding for first responders while keeping a relatively slim budget.
Wessinger, a career educator, wants to protect Lexington County’s environment through zoning, changing development standards and rethinking the county’s landfill service, she said in a previous interview.
She defeated Johnny Jeffcoat, a former member of Lexington County Council who championed a $16 million business park that has yet to create a single job, according to a previous article from The State.
