Blind kitten’s sister helps her navigate life. Shelter hopes they stay together
A kitten helps her blind sister navigate life — and now, a shelter hopes the two aren’t separated.
“They are (both) extremely loving and playful,” Kay Hyman, a spokesperson for a South Carolina animal shelter, told McClatchy News in an Aug. 29 email. “We want them to go home together because they are bonded and have been together since birth.”
The Charleston Animal Society said Peanut and Jelly are up for adoption after a good Samaritan found them. They were weeks old when they landed at the shelter in May.
After their arrival, Peanut — also known as Pnut Butter — and her sister both needed treatment for eye infections. At one point, the shelter gave them a “serum made from a dog blood donor to help heal their eyes,” according to Hyman.
The shelter said Peanut is blind after being born with a condition in which her eyes didn’t develop properly. Meanwhile, Jelly’s eyes are cloudy, and veterinarians don’t think surgery will help her.
Jelly, who has partial sight, is known for being “adventurous” and energetic.
“She helps her blind sister gain more confidence and always includes her in playtime,” the shelter wrote in a Facebook post.
Peanut is described as a “gentle soul” who “loves loud noises (like the [vacuum]) and the smell/taste of good cooking (especially scrambled eggs).”
As of Sept. 3, the shelter’s website listed both of the 4-month-old cats as being in need of new owners. Details about the shelter’s adoption process can be found at charlestonanimalsociety.org.
