Take heart. This rainy start to the week will move out of the Midlands by Thursday, making way for a sunny Halloween.

Frank Strait of the South Carolina Department of Natural Resources Climatology Office, said Friday should be mainly sunny across the state with a gentle breeze.

Temperatures will run 5-8 degrees below average for the date, with Friday’s highs ranging from the lower 60s in the Upstate to the middle 60s along and south of I-20.

Last year’s Halloween felt more like summer.

The nighttime Halloween temperature is expected to drop to 41, calling perhaps for a jacket or some long johns under costumes for the kiddies.

Skies will be clear with humidity in the 70s.

What about Hurricane Melissa?

Chances are slim Hurricane Melissa will impact the Midlands this week. There may be some rip tides and minor flooding along the coast.

The powerful storm is expected to devastate Jamaica Tuesday morning on its way to Cuba.

The storm is expected to turn north hundreds of miles east of the South Carolina coast and is not likely to seriously impact any part of the United States.

Trick-or-treating safety tips

The American Red Cross has these tips for safe trick or treating.

- Use face makeup instead of masks that make seeing difficult.

- Give trick-or-treaters a flashlight.

- Add reflective tape to costumes and trick-or-treat bags.

- Have everyone wear light-colored clothing.

- Use flame-resistant costumes.

- Be cautious around animals, especially dogs.

- Walk, don’t run.

- Only visit homes that have a porch light on.

- Accept treats at the door – never go inside.

- Walk only on the sidewalks. If there’s no sidewalk, walk at the edge of the roadway, facing traffic. - Look both ways before crossing the street, and cross only at the corner. - Don’t cut across yards or use alleys. - Don’t cross between parked cars. - Drivers – use extra caution. The youngsters may forget to look both ways before crossing.

- Check the goodies before allowing children to eat them. - Remove loose candy, open packages and choking hazards. - Discard any items you are not familiar with.

For planning purposes, sunset is 6:32 p.m. Friday.

And remember daylight saving time ends Sunday morning, which means the sun will set Sunday night at 5:30, sunrise at 6:52 a.m.
