Lexington County man killed in overnight motorcycle crash, coroner says

A motorcycle rider was killed late Wednesday night after crashing into a tree, the Lexington County Coroner’s Office said.

The collision happened just before 9:30 p.m. in the 600 block of Old Lexington Road, Coroner Margaret Fisher said in a news release.

Peter W. Chavis died at the scene from injuries he suffered in the wreck, Fisher said.

The 45-year-old Batesburg man was heading south on the Leesville road when he lost control of the motorcycle and ran off the right side of the road, where he hit a tree, according to the release.

Chavis was not wearing a helmet, Fisher said.

The collision is being investigated by the South Carolina Highway Patrol.

Prior to this wreck, seven motorcycle riders have been killed on South Carolina roads in 2020, according to the Department of Public Safety. In those collisions five crash victims were not wearing a helmet, DPS reported.
