Midlands man dies more than a week after motorcycle crash, Lexington Co. coroner says
One man died more than a week after a motorcycle crash, the Lexington County coroner’s office said Sunday.
On Saturday, Paul Edward Yon died at an area hospital from the injuries he suffered in the two-vehicle collision, Coroner Margaret Fisher said in a news release.
The 56-year-old Leesville man had been hospitalized since the Aug. 17 wreck near the intersection of U.S. 378 and Spool Wheel Road, according to the release. That’s close to Lake Murray, and about six miles north of Lexington High School.
It was just before 4 p.m. when Yon was heading west on U.S. 378 that his motorcycle collided with another vehicle that was turning left, Fisher said.
The bike ran off the road and crashed into a ditch, according to the release.
Yon was not wearing a helmet, Fisher said.
Information was not available if anyone else was injured in the collision.
The crash remains under investigation by South Carolina Highway Patrol.
Through Friday afternoon, 69 motorcycle riders have been killed on South Carolina roads in 2020, according to the Department of Public Safety. In those collisions 51 crash victims were not wearing a helmet, DPS reported.
This is the 25th fatal crash in Lexington County this year, and fifth involving a motorcycle, according to DPS.
