Rider dies after being ejected from motorcycle in overnight crash, SC cops say
One person was killed overnight when a motorcycle ran off a Midlands road, South Carolina Highway Patrol said Monday.
The single-vehicle collision happened at about 10 p.m. Sunday on Mayfield Drive in Sumter County, according to Master Trooper David Jones. That’s in the Cherryvale area near Shaw Air Force Base, about half a mile from U.S. 378/Broad Street.
A 2004 Honda motorcycle was driving west on Mayfield Drive when it ran off the left side of the road and hit a ditch before crashing into a culvert, Jones said.
The rider was ejected and died at the scene, according to Jones.
The Sumter County Coroner’s Office is expected to publicly identify the rider after notifying the next of kin.
No other injuries were reported.
Information about if the rider wore a helmet was not available.
There was no word about what caused the motorcycle to veer off the road, but the crash continues to be investigated by Highway Patrol.
This was the second fatal collision in the same area of Sumter County over the weekend.
A 66-year-old woman was killed Friday afternoon when the car she was driving collided with an SUV, according to the coroner’s office.
Through Friday morning, four motorcycle riders were among the 50 people who had died on South Carolina roads in 2022, state Department of Public Safety data shows.
At least four people have been killed in Sumter County crashes in 2022, and two involved a motorcycle, DPS reported.
In 2021, 153 motorcycle riders were among the 1,121 people who had died on South Carolina roads, according to DPS.
