Driver killed when truck crashes in swamp near Midlands road, SC cops say

One person was killed when a pickup truck ran off a Midlands road and flipped over as it crashed into a swamp, the South Carolina Highway Patrol said Sunday.

The single-vehicle collision happened at about 11 p.m. Saturday in Calhoun County, according to Master Trooper David Jones.

A Ford F-250 was driving east on Stoudenmire Drive when it ran off left side of the road, Jones said. That’s in the Cameron area, near Lake Marion.

As the pickup headed off the road, it overturned and landed in a swamp, according to Jones.

The driver died at the scene, Jones said.

The Calhoun County Coroner’s Office is expected to publicly identify the driver after notifying the next of kin. The cause of death has not been made public.

No other injuries were reported.

There was no word if the driver wore a seat belt.

Information on what caused the pickup to veer off the road was not available, but the crash remains under investigation by the Highway Patrol.

Through Thursday, 197 people had died on South Carolina roads in 2022, according to the Department of Public Safety. Last year, 1,192 people died in crashes in South Carolina, DPS reported.

At least three people have been killed in Calhoun County crashes in 2022, according to DPS. There were nine deaths there last year, DPS data shows.
