Overturned tractor trailer blocking traffic on highway near Malfunction Junction

A crash completely blocked one side of a highway running through Richland County in the area called Malfunction Junction, causing injuries and delays for drivers making the Wednesday morning commute.

All of the westbound lanes on Interstate 26 were blocked at Exit 108, which is the junction with Interstate 126, according to the South Carolina Department of Transportation. That’s in Columbia, near the Lexington County line.

The collision involved an overturned tractor trailer, according to Lance Cpl. Tyler Tidwell, of the South Carolina Highway Patrol.

The crash happened at about 4:40 a.m., and the lanes were still blocked as of 8 a.m., according to SCDOT.

Injuries were reported in the wreck, according to the South Carolina Department of Public Safety. There was no word on the number of people hurt or their conditions.

Vehicles were backed up for miles, traffic cameras showed.

There was no word when it’s expected that the lanes would be reopened and the scene cleared.

“Please take an alternate route. Expect delays,” Tidwell said.
