Coroner identifies man killed in accident on Midlands road

A man was killed in an early-morning crash on a Midlands road, the Sumter County Coroner’s Office said.

Eduardo Rivera died in Tuesday’s accident, Coroner Robbie Baker said in a late night news release. The 35-year-old Bishopville resident died at the scene, according to the release.

The single-vehicle collision happened at about 4 a.m. on U.S. 15, Baker said. The crash happened near the intersection with Browntown Road, close to Exit 116 on Interstate 20 and about 6 miles from Rivera’s home, according to the release.

Details about the crash were not available, and it was not clear if Rivera was driving the vehicle, or if there were any other occupants.

There was no word if Rivera was wearing a seat belt.

Information about what caused the crash was not available. The wreck, along with the manner and cause of death, remain under investigation by the South Carolina Highway Patrol, Sumter County’ Sheriff’s Office and the coroner’s office.

An autopsy is scheduled for later this week at the Medical University of South Carolina in Charleston.

Through Monday, 30 people had died on South Carolina roads in 2023, according to the state Department of Public Safety. Last year, 1,075 people died in crashes in South Carolina, DPS reported.

This was the first fatal collision reported in Sumter County this year, DPS data shows. Last year, 29 deaths were reported in the county, DPS reported.
