Crash on interstate in Columbia blocks all southbound lanes during morning commute

Drivers making the Monday morning commute in Columbia were delayed by a crash that blocked one side of a major highway.

All of the southbound lanes on Interstate 77 were temporarily closed following a crash near Exit 5, according to the South Carolina Department of Transportation. That’s the junction with Bluff Road in Richland County, near the Lexington County line.

The crash happened at about 7:50 a.m., according to SCDOT.

Information about the cause of the crash, and the number of vehicles involved, was not available. Traffic cameras showed emergency vehicles responding to the scene.

The South Carolina Department of Public Safety did not say if anyone was injured in the crash.

Traffic cameras showed vehicles backed up on I-77.

At about 8:20 a.m., SCDOT said all of the lanes had reopened.
