South Carolina man run over by two vehicles is killed, coroner says
A South Carolina man recently was killed when the bicycle he was riding was run over by two vehicles, according to the Sumter County Coroner’s Office.
Wesley McCray, a 50-year-old Sumter County resident, died Friday following what Coroner Robbie Baker called an accident.
At about 7:30 p.m. Friday, McCray was riding a bicycle near the intersection of McCrays Mill Road and Cooks Street, the coroner’s office said in a news release. That’s in an area near Sumter High School.
McCray was hit by two vehicles and died at the scene, according to the release.
No other injuries were reported.
Information about what caused the crash was not available, but it continues to be investigated by the coroner’s office and the Sumter Police Department. An autopsy is scheduled to be performed Tuesday at the Medical University of South Carolina in Charleston.
Through Sept. 28, at least 656 people had died on South Carolina roads in 2025, according to the state Department of Public Safety. Last year, at least 948 people died in crashes in South Carolina, DPS reported.
At least 17 people have died in Sumter County crashes in 2025, according to DPS data. There were 19 deaths in the county in 2024, DPS reported.
